Chapter 21
I woke up, my head pounding and my body hurting. My eyes opened with ease, healed. Medical equipment beeped and buzzed faintly as I laid there. The soft blue walls and the giant windows, covered with white curtains, opened to a breathtaking view of snow-capped mountains. My arms were like jello, pushing my body up was a challenge.
Where was I?
Next to my bed was a note.
âDonât get out of bed by yourself! Ring the bell.â
With significant effort, I leaned over and rang the bell. Minutes later, Daniel was in my room helping me pull the cover off the bed. The way he looked at me not with indifference but with no spark, no⦠desire. He had my elbow and his other arm around my waist. My legs stood stiffly and made movements that could be mistaken for steps. He led me to the bathroom.
âIâll wait out here and help you.â
I arched my eyebrow.
I nodded, leaning against the sink and took two deep breaths. My lungs felt as though gravel had been poured down my throat, answering him didnât seem feasible.
After doing what I needed, I stared at my face in the mirror. The cut on my cheek had tiny black stitches, sticking out like overgrown stubble. I brushed my finger over the threads and they felt like tiny cat whiskers cut short. My cheek was a mash of yellow and green coloring, bruising that had healed. Same under my left eye. I was a mess, unattractive at best and ugly mess of a person. The gravity of what Iâd just been through hit me, weighing on me, a heavy harness cuffing me helplessly to Daniel.
âRose? Are you okay?â
I didnât know. I was healing, physically but everything, being attacked⦠being the Grail⦠I shook my head in answer but he couldnât hear me. My thoughts were my own. My pain felt internally. Betrayal. Abuse. All in the name of being the Grail.
He opened the door. His face wearing relief I was standing on my own. Although, the sink played a big part in shouldering my weight. Daniel wrapped his arm around my waist and I winced from his touch. Not from the physical pain that felt as if I was being pricked with sewing needles on every nerve. He held me up, carrying my weight, shouldering my feelings too as he walked next to me, his touch filled me with energy to help fuel me for the trek back to my bed. He tucked me in and spoke in a soft whisper.
âYouâve been asleep for two days. We dropped Cooper off in a city and he could get to his safe house where his parents live.â
I blinked at his words. I liked Cooper. He was a good kid and I assumed he saved us. Daniel had been held down by Matthewâs men and I was⦠Tears welled up in my eyes. I hadnât been completely violated. Matthew didnât take that from me. The relief of that thought made me close my eyes and the hot tears escaped, rolled down my cheek.
